FAQ

You have a question, rbCarbon has the answer

For your convenience, we categorized your FAQs and our answers around alternative horseshoeing and gluing below.

Adhesive tabs

We offer the adhesive tabs in 6 sizes. Custom-made products are possible at a surcharge. The tab size is measured at the widest part of the hoof, ideally just after its trimming.

Adhesive tab size ranges:

  • G1: approx. 50 – 70mm / 1.97 – 2.76in hoof width
  • G2: approx. 71 – 90mm / 2.77 – 3.54in hoof width
  • G3: approx. 91 – 115mm / 3.55 – 4.53in hoof width
  • G4: approx. 116 – 135mm / 4.54 – 5.31in hoof width
  • G5: approx. 136 – 160mm / 5.32 – 6.30in hoof width
  • G5plus: approx 160+mm / 6.30+in hoof width

Lateral and medial, so the toe can roll freely. In the case of a toe-off, the welding of the tabs shouldn’t be placed in this area, as otherwise they will be unnecessarily weakened.
If the tabs can’t be positioned on a used horseshoe in a way that the maximum welding specified by the design is achieved (e.g. due to increased abrasion of the shoe in the toe area), a new shoe should be used.

Heat gun (preferably with a digital display for the temperature to be regulated) with a 9mm nozzle attachment. Flame-retardant pad (no metal) for unrolling, if possible with a suitable groove for adjusting the outer bead of the adhesive tab. We recommend hardwood as well as protective gloves.

Yes, we recommend 99% isopropanol or any acetone-free brake degreaser. Always wear the appropriate protective gloves for all degreasing and gluing activities.

Conditionally “yes”, if there is still a sufficiently thick layer of colored or black elastomer on the inside of the tab (the side facing the hoof) after detaching the tab from the hoof. However, we recommend replacing the tabs after re-adapting the horseshoe to the foot to ensure the best fit and best glueing conditions.

Yes. We recommend removing the front flap of the tab and placing it in front of the cap. Then position the two remaining flaps behind the cap. Please, ensure that the side cap does not obstruct the hot air flow when welding the tab on. Therefore, always roll the horseshoe away from the side cap onto the tab.

The tabs are welded to the left and right side of the horseshoe so that the colored or black, elastic layer faces inwards. The attachment point for the rear (smallest) flap is a little behind the widest part of the shoe. Once the first tab is attached to one side of the shoe, the opposite tab is held against the shoe, the correct position determined and the attachment point marked with a permanent marker. Make sure that the front (largest) flaps do not overlap.

Should it be necessary to place the tabs very far to the front, e.g. with strongly rotating hooves, so that the front flaps overlap slightly, simply cut back the flaps with a sharp blade or scissors before gluing.

Glue

We recommend MD 150.

This glue is available in our shop as rbCarbon private label glue.

Alternatively, Loctite 401 or similar hoof-friendly cyano-acrylate adhesives with sufficient elasticity can be used.

Hooves

The hooves shouldn’t be greased at least two weeks prior to gluing. In general, the additional greasing of the hoof walls is not good for the health of hooves.

No. Humid weather conditions and also slightly wet hooves don’t have any negative impact on the adhesive.

Using a straight and very sharp hoof knife, starting at the upper edge of the tab and slowly guiding the blade down the hoof wall with a cutting motion.

At short intervals (approx. after 1 cm / 0.39in  of cutting), try to lever the tab away with the blade by pressing it towards the tab. Use the back of the blade as a counter bearing on the hoof wall. This (cutting + levering) releases the tab from the hoof wall quite easily without destroying anything.

Cost

Pls refer to our Webshop (currently in German only) if you want to order within the European Union. Outside the EU we sell through distribution partners.

Horses with osteoarthritis

Yes, they can also be used with osteoarthritis. The strength and the friction coefficient of the TPU coating material is approximately the same as that of a green Duplo shoe, which allows a footing like barehoof on most surfaces. Only on surfaces with strong stopping characteristics such as rough asphalt the material provides only little cushioning.

For animals with osteoarthritis and therefore shock-sensitive joints, an additional soft cushioning layer can be inserted on the hoof side.

Weight

The 142mm / 5.9in wide front shoe weighs just under 260g (0.57 pounds) without the special elastomer layer. In addition, each adhesive tab (complete with elastomer) weighs 20g (0.04 pounds), so a total of around 300g (0.66 pounds) per shoeing system. However, we can only say it exactly when we have the things in front of us in real life.  One thing is for sure, though, they are significantly lighter than the Duplo composite shoes or iron shoes.
